The Administration of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has revised the minimum wages in the Union Territory. The new wages will come into effect on January 1st, 2024. Employees working in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands should be aware of these changes. Revised Minimum Wages in Andaman And Nicobar Islands From 01 January 2024

The Department of Labour, Employment & Training of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has published a gazette notification on December 27th, 2023 regarding the revised minimum wages in the Union Territory. Per the notification, the updated minimum wages will apply to all 6 Schedules of Employment as well as Daily Rated Mazdoors (DRMs) engaged by the A&N Administration across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as of January 1st, 2024.

The new minimum wage rates will be uniform across all three districts of the territory – South Andaman, North & Middle Andaman, and Nicobar District. All employers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will need to pay their workers at least the revised minimum wage according to the schedule that the employees fall under, effective January 1st, 2024. This applies to Daily Rated Mazdoors (DRMs) as well hired directly by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

The updated minimum wage rates in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands taking effect on January 1st, 2024 are as follows:

Note :

  • The new minimum wage rates are intended to include a weekly day of rest. To calculate the monthly wage, the daily minimum wage amount should be multiplied by 26 days.
  • No gender discrimination – Where men and women employees perform similar work, wages should not differ based on gender under the new rates.
  • Existing employees earning higher wages – Wherever an employee is already earning higher pay than the revised minimum wage applicable for their category of work, their existing higher wage rate is to continue being paid.

Below are the 6 Schedules of Employment:

  1. Shops, Commercial Establishment, Residential Hotels, Lodging Houses, Restaurants, Eating Houses, Theaters and Places of Public Amusements or Entertainment.
  2. Wood Based Industries
  3. Educational Institutes / Schools/ Nurseries / Kinder Gartens / Tutorials / Coaching Institutes in the Private Sector other than the CBSE Affiliated Institutions.
  4. Agriculture
  5. Construction or Maintenance of Roads or in the Building Operations or Stone Breaking or Stone Crushing.
  6. Loading and Unloading

Salary/Rates Calculation

To calculate the Minimum Wage Per Month, you need to multiply the Minimum Wage Per Day by 26.

  • Minimum Wage Per Month = Minimum Wage Per Day X 26
