What is Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme?

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme (PM-Kisan Scheme) is a scheme initiated by the Government of India to provide minimum income support of up to Rs. 6000 to all small and marginal farmers per year.

The Government pays this sum in three equal installments of Rs. 2000 each every four months. This scheme has cost to be expected Rs. 75000 crores which will be financed by the Union Government.

History of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme (PM-Kisan)

The scheme was first visualized and executed by the Government of Telangana as the Rythu Bandhu Scheme, where a certain amount of Rs. 10000 is given directly to eligible farmers per year in two installments. This scheme was very good and hence received praise from various organizations for its successful implementation. Many economists suggest that this type of investment support is better than a farm loan waiver.

So, in view of the above positive outcome of this scheme, the Government of India wanted this scheme to implement as a nationwide project. On 1 February 2019, during the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India, Piyush Goyal announced the implementation of this scheme as a nationwide project.

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme on 24 February 2019 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh by transferring the first installment of Rs. 2000 each to over one crore farmers.
