What is EPF?

The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme in India managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). It helps employees build a substantial corpus for their retirement through monthly contributions from both the employee and employer.

Important Things to Know

EPF Contribution Rules

  1. Salary Ceiling: EPF contributions are calculated on basic salary up to ₹15,000. If your basic salary is higher, contributions are still calculated on ₹15,000 only.
  2. Contribution Split:
    • Employee: 12% of basic salary
    • Employer: 12% of basic salary, split as:
      • 3.67% to EPF
      • 8.33% to EPS (Pension Scheme)
  3. Interest: Credited annually (usually in March) but calculated monthly.

Tax Benefits

  • Employee EPF contributions are eligible for deduction under Section 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh)
  • Interest earned is tax-free
  • Withdrawal after 5 continuous years of service is tax-free

Withdrawal Rules

  • Full withdrawal allowed on retirement, unemployment (2 months+), or before retirement (age 54+)
  • Partial withdrawal allowed for specific purposes (housing, medical, education)
  • Early withdrawal may attract tax

Tips for Better Planning

  1. Start Early: The power of compounding means early contributions grow significantly
  2. Consider VPF: If you can afford it, voluntary contributions can substantially increase your retirement corpus
  3. Review Annually: Update your calculations yearly with actual salary and balance
  4. Conservative Estimates: Use realistic salary increment percentages
  5. Keep Records: Download and save your calculations for future reference
